Hillsborough Football Stadium is the home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. Sheffield Wednesday, also known as The Owls, are arguably the bigger side out of Sheffield’s two professional football clubs. They have been champions of England 4 times, they won 3 FA Cups and one League Cup. The main rivals of Wednesday are the city neighbours of Sheffield United, which play their home games at Bramall Lane.

Hillsborough Stadium an impressive all-seater football temple with a capacity of nearly 40,000. It has been a host venue for World Cup and European Championship games, League Cup Final replays and F.A. Cup semi-finals. Sheffield Wednesday moved to Hillsborough in 1899, at that time the stadium was still called Owlerton Stadium, after the suburb of Sheffield in which it stands. In 1914, the stadium got renamed Hillsborough after the series of improvements in 1913. The record attendance of the ground was achieved in 1934 when 72,841 people attended an FA Cup match between Wednesday and Manchester City.

On 15 April 1989, the ground was the scene of the Hillsborough disaster, when 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death in an FA Cup semi-final.

In the early to mid 1990s Hillsborough got converted into an all-seater stadium. In 1996 the stadium was one of the playing venues during the Euro 1996 tournament.

By Car

From the North/South/East

Exit the M1 at junction 36 and follow the A61 towards Sheffield. Continue along the road for app. 4 miles until the 2nd roundabout. Take the 3rd exit (Leppings Lane) and the ground is situated on the left-hand side.

From the West

Take the A57 for Sheffield. As you approach the city the road splits in two - take the left fork onto the Rivelin Valley Road (A6101). Continue for app. 3.75 miles, turn left (onto one way system) and follow the road round to the right onto Holme Lane. This road then becomes Bradfield Road. At the junction with the A61 Penistone Road, turn left towards Barnsley. Hillsborough is on the left hand side after Hillsborough Park.

From The South/East (non matchdays only)

Leave the M1 at junction 33 and turn left towards Sheffield City Centre on the 'Sheffield Parkway' dual carriageway. Continue until the end of the Parkway, when you will come to Park Square roundabout. Turn right and continue to follow signs for the A61 towards Barnsley. Signs for Hillsborough are also prominent. The stadium is situated three miles from the city centre and is on your left-hand side after Hillsborough Park.
