Sevilla Catedral and La Giralda

Seville Cathedral is the 3rd biggest one in terms of size, after Saint Peter Basilica in Vatican City and Saint Paul in London, UK. The construction of the church began in 1401, after the Christians reconquered Seville, and it ended in 1506. Initially, the Moors built a mosque exactly at the same location in the late 12th century. But the mosque had been damaged by an earthquake and was replaced by the new, grand cathedral. The interior is enormous and boasts five large naves. The building is 126 meter long and 83 meter wide (413 x 272 ft), with a ceiling height of up to 37 meter (121 ft). The sarcophagus of Columbus monument lies near the main entrance to the cathedral.

The Giralda Tower is one of the most magnificent buildings in Seville and dominates the skyline. It is one of three remaining Almohad minarets in the world (the others are in Marrakesh and Rabat, Morocco) and became the bell tower of Seville Cathedral after the Reconquista. Entrance to the tower is from inside the cathedral, to the left of the Capilla Real in the northeast corner. A long climb on the ramp leads to the tower's belfry from where you have a superb 360 degree view over Seville.
