First permanent amphitheatre

The colosseum was the first permanent amphitheatre to be raised in the city of Rome, and the most impressive arena the Classical world had yet seen. The theatre was used for gladiatorial fights, public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology.

It was originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater and was the largest building of the era. Nowadays the Colosseum is a ruin of what was the greatest arena in the ancient world.
