Located in the park is the residence of Áras an Uachtaráin, Dublin Zoo, Papal Cross, People's Gardens, The Magazine Fort, and The Wellington Monument.

Urban Park and Zoo

Phoenix Park is the largest urban enclosed park in Europe, with a Circumference of 11km (7m) and a total area of 712 hectares (1,760 acres). Situated 3km (2m) west of the city centre. Ornamental gardens, nature trails, and broad expanses of grassland, separated by avenues of trees, including oak, beech, pine, chestnut, and lime. Livestock graze peacefully on pasturelands, deer roam the forested areas, and horses romp on polo fields.

The main entrance to the Phoenix Park is at Parkgate Street. Dublin 7, near Castleknock. There is no charge to enter the Phoenix Park. The Park is split into Castleknock, Chapelizod and St James.

All roads may lead to Rome, but in Dublin a large number make a detour via (or due to) the Phoenix Park. You will be able to reach the park by Dublin Bus, head for Castleknock, the Cabra and Navan Road or Chapelizod (get off at Parkgate Street or Chapelizod Road near Islandbridge Gate). Many tour buses are routed through the park as well. The LUAS will go as far as Heuston Station, between five and ten minutes walk from the park. You can also take a local train to Ashtown Station, again a few minutes walk away. If you are using your car you will have no problem getting to the park, though finding a convenient parking space may prove challenging on weekends.

Dublin Zoo is located within the park and houses more than 700 animals and tropical birds from around the world. It's one of the oldest zoos in the world. The oldest zoo in Europe is Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna Austria. Europe's biggest zoo is Zoologischer Garten in Berlin Germany.
