Sights in Zurich Old Town District

Grossmünster Church – The Grossmünster or Great Minster church with its two matching towers is a real beauty and one of the most famous landmarks of Zurich. The Zürich Tourism Board website says this about Grossmünster: "According to legend, Charlemagne discovered the graves of the city's martyrs Felix and Regula and had a church build as a choristers' cloister on the spot." It's one of the four major churches in the city, the others being the Fraumünster, Predigerkirche and St. Peterskirche.

Fraumünster Church – this church and former convent is most famously know for its stained glass windows designed by artist Marc Chagall. Chagall was 80 years old when he did the windows. Other than the windows, this church is relatively plain, a result of the Reformation period.

St. Peterskirche and St. Peter’s Clock Tower -- Church located next to the Lindenhof Hill in the Lindenhof quarter. It's built in the 9th century, which makes it the oldest church in Zürich Switzerland. It also boasts the largest clock face in Europe and contains some old wall paintings.

Lindenhof Hill – was the perfect spot for defending the city in the medieval times. Set high above the river, the current-day park holds the remnants of a Roman fortess and customs post. There are many trees and benches, and the hill offers a great view of the city. The hillside is as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

Niederdorf is the entertainment district of Zurich old town. The streets and alleys of Niederhof are pedestrian zones and a shopper's paradise with lots of cosy boutiques. At night the many bars, restaurants and street artists turn the Niederdorf into an exciting center of entertainment, which makes it the main entertainment district on the east bank of the Limmat river, below the University. The medieval streets of the Niederdorf district also house a number of gay bars/clubs.

Walk around and explore the charming narrow alleys such as Spiegelgasse and Froschaugasse, picturesque streets such as Rindermarkt and Neumarkt, and discover galleries, antiques shops, boutiques, bookstores and restaurants.

Limmatquai -- built in the 19th century along the right side of the Limmat, running from Central to Bellevue. Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten, Zunfthaus zur Haue, Zunfthaus zum Rüden and Zunfthaus zur Saffran guild houses are located at the Limmatquai.
