Gamla Stan District in Sweden - Royal Palace

Stockholm Gamla Stan consists out of narrow lanes, interesting shops, cafés, and some good restaurants. It's the most famous area in Stockholm. Many of the streets in Gamla Stan are car free.

The main part of Gamla Stan is located on the small island called Stadsholmen. The Gamla Stan district is formed by the adjacent island of Riddarholmen, and the other surrounding islets of Helgeandsholmen, and Strömsborg.

It is a lovely area to explore on foot. The two main shopping streets are Österlånggatan and Västerlånggatan, which follow the route of the old medieval city wall. The old iron market connects the two streets. Located in the heart of Gamla Stan is the oldest square of Stockholm, called Stortorget. This square is surrounded by old merchants houses including the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building. From the square runs the oldest street in Stockholm, Köpmangatan.

The Royal Palace, located on the island of Stadsholmen in the heart of Stockholm. It's the biggest palace in the world, with 608 rooms, that is still used by a reigning monarch. The palace was built between 1697 and 1754 on the site of a 13th century castle that was destroyed by fire, and the remains of the castle can be seen in the Tre Konor Palace Museum in the cellars. The other main attractions in the palace are the Royal Apartments, Apartments of the Orders of Chivalry, The Treasury, Hall of State, Armoury and the Museum of Antiquities of Gustav III. The Royal Apartments are the most stunning sight here, with an impressive blend of styles, from Baroque to Gustavian neo-classic and Rococo.
