Paris Latin Quarter is a riverside quarter containing many historical monuments, museums and gardens, from the Sorbonne, Institut du Monde Arabe to the Middle Ages Musée de Cluny and the Museum of Natural History. It is home of several universities , such as the prestigious University of la Sorbonne and many other important colleges, and is filled with artists, academics and students. The Pantheon, located on the top of Mt. St-Genevieve, looks out over all Paris.

The latin quarter area is stacked with second hand bookshops, including those specialising in English books, and masses of bistros. Quartier Latin has some of Paris's oldest relics, the Gallo-Roman baths near Cluny which are the remains of the ancient Roman city on this site, the Eglise St-Etienne du Mont which is the memorial to St Geneviève, Paris's patron saint. Within the quarter is also the Jardin du Luxembourg, dedicated to the children of Paris by Napoléon.

The Latin Quarter got its name because Latin was spoken here, and was in fact the official language until 1793. The university tradition lives on in this neighborhood, seat of the famous student protests of May 1968.
