Centrum or Binnenstad

The core of the city center is the area around the Dam and Centraal Station, and through the neighborhood known as De Wallen (The Walls). It's the oldest part of the city, and includes the Red Light District. It's home to the main downtown shopping areas and attractions such as the Royal Palace, the Amsterdam Historical Museum, Madame Tussaud's, and many canal-boat piers.

Amsterdam is a wonderfully walkable city with most major sites located in or near the city center. Public transportation is excellent and driving is strongly discouraged within the canal ring. Of course biking is the preferred Dutch way to travel and some would say the only way to truly experience the city. Neighborhoods situated within Amsterdam city centre are The Old Centre, Dam Square, Nieuwmarkt, Red Light District, The Canal Belt or Grachtengordel, the Old Jewish Quarter, Jordaan, Spui and Spiegelkwartier. Many hotels can be found in these areas, all within easy walking distance of the city's main sights and landmarks.
