Which area should I stay in?

Choosing the right area is key to a successful stay, therefore it is imperative to select a neighbourhood which suits your needs.

If you are working to a tight budget, cheap long or short term rental accommodation can be found in Barcelona Sants, within easy reach of the railway station. Predominantly a residential area, it allows you the opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture and meet the Catalan people. It may be a little further from the major tourist areas but the impressive public transport system means you can still get around with ease.

Barcelona Barrio is the area for beach lovers – close to the city centre and with a wide selection of modern and traditional apartments to rent, you may pay slightly more but it is ideal if you want to be close to major attractions.

Lose yourself in the incredible city architecture of the Eixample district. Two of the most iconic structures can be found near by – Gaudi’s Casa Milà and the world famous Sagrada Familia Cathedral. If shopping and lively nightlife are also high on your criteria, you should definitely consider Eixample when choosing your holiday accommodation or lettings.

Barrio Gótico, the Gothic Quarter with Moorish squares, trendy tapas bars and bodegas is in the heart of the action, you can marvel at stunning architecture and enjoy a rich cultural experience while staying in this area. Pretty apartments to rent with baroque style balconies and wooden shutters line the narrow cobbled streets awaiting your visit. This area is in a prime location for exploring, and within walking distance to Las Ramblas, La Boqueria, Barcelona Port and the beach. There is a wide selection of Barcelona holiday apartments to be found in this central area, both for short stay or long term rental.

Another area to stay in is Montjuic, there are so many activities and places of interest to see and do. In fact you could end up spending your entire holiday in one place! Situated on a graduated hill it offers incredible views of the city.

Museums and peaceful parks jostle for your attention as you explore this picturesque area. The Poble Espanyol (Spanish village) filled with artisan shops and typical local restaurants will delight and capture your imagination. In the evenings the area comes alive with the Magic Fountain show, a kaleidoscope of colours fill the air as jets of water dance to music. You can also reach Montjuïc via a different mode of transport – cable cars run regularly throughout the day from Barcelona port so you never have to worry about climbing the hill!

What to see in the city

The first thing you notice about Barcelona are the sounds, from the whirring of the coffee machine in the local bar to the passing scooter horns. Grab a table by the roadside, sip café con leche and watch city life unfold.

Defined by its architecture – Barcelona in Spain is sprinkled with intriguing art and sculpture which no city in the world can rival. Las Ramblas – an avenue laden with stalls and street performers, is a main thoroughfare from Plaça de Catalunya to the port - perfect for sampling tapas, people watching and soaking up the fun, effervescent atmosphere. Many holiday lettings can be found on La Rambla and in the nearby area.

Las Ramblas also leads you to the Gothic Quarter and La Boqueria – a colourful indoor market with locally sourced organic produce and an incredible blend of sights and sounds. Continue to the port area and take a cable car to Montjuïc mountain, or simply head to the beach.

If city history and culture is high on your agenda – Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Park Güell, Casa Milà and the Poble Espanyol are a must see and for avid sports fans the Barcelona Camp Nou Stadium trophy room is also worth a tour.

A short bus, metro and funicular ride from the city centre sits Mount Tibidabo, it has arguably the best panoramic vistas over Barcelona. Journey to the top of the mountain, there is a fun fairground where you can incorporate the incredible views with a fun day out for all the family. There is never a dull moment in Barcelona – with so much to see and do the only thing you will be short of is time.

Getting around in the city

Driving from the airport into the centre of Barcelona (port area) should take around 20 minutes or if you are driving from elsewhere in Europe the city is about an hour and a half south of La Jonquera at the French border.

It’s so easy to get around with the metro, FGC, trams and the local bus service all at your disposal. There are a range of ticket types available depending on which zones you wish to travel in. You can also hire bicycles relatively cheaply here, allowing you the freedom to explore the city in the open air.

Barcelona will excite, delight and inspire, whichever time of the year, and for however long you visit. Whether you rent your apartment or studio in one of the tourist areas or live like a local during your stay – one thing is for sure, you will want to return to this incredible city sooner rather than later.

When staying in the city for a longer period in a self catering holiday letting, you are able to visit some of the regions highlights by taking a day tour.
