Vienna St Stephen's Cathedral -- St. Stephen's Cathedral is not only a symbol of the city of Vienna, it is also simultaneously a landmark of Austria. The church is located in the heart of the city centre.
St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) is one of Vienna’s most famous sights. St. Stephen's Cathedral defines the Vienna city center and has been the heart of central Vienna for centuries. It is one of the most famous and popular sights in Vienna Austria and was built in 1147 AD. For a long time it was uncontested as Europe's highest building measuring almost 137 m.
Duke Rudolf IV of Habsburg ordered the complete restructuring of the church in Gothic style. In 1359, he laid the cornerstone of the nave with its two aisles. The Cathedral South Tower ( the Hochturm ), was completed in 1433 (the Viennese have given it the nickname "Steffl," representative of the whole cathedral).
The St. Stephen's Cathedral, is an island of Gothic magnificence in a sea of Baroque and 19th Century architecture. Most of the Stephansdom church dates back to the 14th, 15th, and 16th Centuries, with the Romanesque "Giant's Doorway" on the west facade dating back to the early 1200s.
Climb the 343 steps to the St Stephens tower- keeper's room and enjoy a breathtaking view of the city of Vienna Austria.

Currency -- Euro (€) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of €500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of €2, 1 and 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.
Language --German is the official language of Austria, but because the high schools teach English, it's commonly spoken throughout the country, especially in tourist regions. Certain Austrian minorities speak Slavic languages, and Hungarian is common in Burgenland.
Electricity -- Vienna operates on 220 volts AC, with the European 50-cycle circuit. That means that U.S.-made appliances will need a transformer (sometimes called a converter). Many Viennese hotels stock adapter plugs but not power transformers. Electric clocks, CD players, and tape recorders, however, will not work well, even with transformers.
Air Connections -- Vienna International Airport is located to the southeast of Vienna. The airport handled over 254,000 arrivals and departures in 2007 and was frequented by 18.77 million passengers. Following lengthy negotiations with surrounding communities, the airport will be expanded to increase its capacity by adding a third runway. The airport is currently undergoing a major expansion, including a new terminal building and office park, to prepare for an expected increase in passengers.
