Munich Marienplatz -- Marienplatz is Munich's main central square.
Standing at the Munich Marienplatz, in front of the city hall "Rathaus" you find yourself right in the heart of old city Munich. The facade of the Rathaus city hall is gigantic - take care though: the appearance is misleading. The Rathaus was not built in the middle ages as it might seem, but in the late 19th century - one example of German "Gründerzeit style", a historical backdating style - around 1900 people apparently did not want to fully endorse the new techniques that science and industry had brought around but built houses that looked like castles or temples.
At the New City Hall (Neues Rathaus) on the central Marienplatz square crowds gather at eleven o'clock every day to see the glockenspiel show spring into action. During the summer tourist season, the Glockenspiel plays (spiel) three or four times each day.
Munich Marienplatz (Marien Square) is the heart and heartbeat of Munich's old city. Much of the old city was badly damaged or destroyed during the allied bombings in 1944-45, and rebuilt following WWII. In that respect, the square is quite new, however, it has a very long history and was the Bavarian seat of power for almost nine centuries. The Wittelsbach dynasty's first palace, the "Alter Hof," is one block NE of the New City Hall. The square and its immediate environs appear to be part of the Middle Ages and part of the Renaissance. Italian influence can be seen in the Münzhof, (royal stables) as well in the main post office on Maximillianstrasse (which is also one of the most exclusive shopping areas in the world). When leaving the square one has a choice of eight or ten different directions to travel, all of which lead to places worthwhile visiting.
Standing regally in the center of the square is the the Mariensäule (Mary's Column), so-named for the Virgin Mary.
The Marienplatz square itself is a centerpiece for Munich Founding Festival as well as for Fasching celebrations and the popular Christmas market.
