Location of Puerta del Sol : The plaza Puerta del Sol can be found in the very heart of Madrid’s Old Town, within walking distance of Plaza Mayor or Gran Via Avenue. The Palacio Real, the official home of the Royal Family, lies further west. Parliament and the museum district are to the east of the plaza and Atocha train station is more to the southeast.

Heart of Central Madrid's Historical Centre

The Plaza Puerta del Sol in Madrid is the heart of central Madrid's historic city center. Originally the square was one of the city's gates, adorned with an image of the sun. That's why the square is known as the Gate of the Sun square. The square is a popular meeting place.

Landmarks and Sights on Plaza Puerta del Sol

Real Casa de Correos -- building built in the 18th century as part of the Post Office. Now it functions as the headquarters of the President of Madrid's Autonomous Community. The building contains the famous clock whose bells mark the traditional eating of the Twelve Grapes and the beginning of a new year.

El Oso y El Madroño -- the Bear and the Strawberry Tree statue located at the east side of the square. It's the official symbol of the city. The female bear symbolizes the fertile soil of Madrid and the tree symbolizes the aristocracy.

Tío Pepe -- advert of a brand of sherry. The sign is located above the square's eastern building between the Calle de Alcalá and the Carrera de San Jerónimo.

Mariblanca statue -- a reproduction of the original one, which is in the Municipal Museum.

King Carlos III Statue -- King Charles III statue on the south side of the square. It's nicknamed "el rey alcalde" ("the mayor-king").

 Kilómetro cero -- kiometer zero mark on the ground, located outside the Casa de Correos.
