The Hague City Centre in The Netherlands

Downtown The Hague hosts the Dutch government, and is the residence of a lot of national and international organisations. Governmental like the Binnenhof and the residences of the Queen, international like the many ambassies, the Peace Palace and even the UN International Tribunal.

The Hague in Holland has numerous attractions and museums of which Mauritshuis and Gemeentemuseum are the most famous.

Mauritshuis. The mansion of Johan Maurits, governor-general of Dutch Brazil, Count of Nassau Siegen, arose in about 1640. The collection consists of masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age.

Museum Bredius Den Haag. Dr. Abraham Bredius was an art historian and art collector as well as director of the Mauritshuis. On his death in 1946, he bequeathed his vast collection of 17-th century art to the city of Den Haag. The museum now features a collection of silver, china and paintings.

Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. The Gemeentemuseum (municipal museum) owns an extensive collections of modern art, the applied arts, fashion and music. The modern art collection provides an overview of developments in the fine arts since the early 19th century.

Historical Museum Den Haag. The museum is housed in a monumental 17-th century edifice. Numerous paintings and objects from the museum's collection illustrate the history of more than seven centuries of The Hague.

Main squares located in The Hague City Centre, Holland

Grote Markt or Great Market -- central city square surrounded by bars and restaurants. During summer the Grote Markt hosts music events.

Binnenhof or Inner Court -- has been the political heart of The Hague for centuries. Famous buildings located around the square are the ‘Ridderzaal’ (Hall of Knights) where the queen holds her annual speech at Prinsjesdag, the First and Second Chamber of Parliament and the tower or Het Torentje, which is the office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands since 1982.

Buitenhof or Outer Court -- square situated next to the Binnenhof, bordered by many outdoor cafés with terraces and restaurants. It contains also the popular Pathé Buitenhof cinema.

The Plein -- downtown historic square several large sidewalk cafés. Het Plein is one of the main nightlife hotspots in The Hague and is very popular with visitors and locals. At the centre of the square is a statue of William of Orange.

De Plaats -- smaller center square opposite the Hofvijver. It offers a mix of restaurants, lunchrooms and shops. Many historical events took place on this square due to it's close proximity of the former Gate Prison.

Hofplaats -- square home to an organic farm market every Wednesday.

Rabbijn Maarsenplein -- cosy square in the city centre of The Hague behind the Nieuwe Kerk, in the middle of the lively Chinatown. The square offers a surprising mix of cultures and a wide choice of quality restaurants with large terraces, each with its own character.

Haagsche Bluf -- little square with a mix of old and new facades, and a collection of boutiques and quaint shops. The Haagsche Bluf shopping centre is located in The Hague's city centre between the Dagelijkse Groenmarkt, Venestraat, Vlamingstraat and Nieuwstraat.
