Madrid City Centre -- Downtown Madrid is the area situated around the main town squares called Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol. In the past, Plaza Mayor would see all sorts of important events, be they canonisations, corridas or public executions. Today it is full of shops and restaurants. Both squares are surrounded by many hotels which makes it a great place to begin your exploration of the city of Madrid. The most popular neighbourhoods in Madrid are located around these squares: Sol, Huertas, La Latina, Chueca, Malasaña, the colourful Lavapiés and the student neighbourhood Moncloa/Argüelles.

In the downtown area of Madrid you can find the so-called ‘Golden Triangle of Art’ which includes: The Prado National Museum, The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (MNCARS) or Reina Sofia Museum. Inside the Prado Museum visitors may see masterpieces of famous painters like: Goya, Velazquez, van Dyck, Dürer, Breughel and Rubens while Thyssen-Bornemisza owns a great collection of paintings and sculptures from different periods of art.

Inside the Reina Sofia Museum you can visit the world-famous Picasso masterpiece called ‘Guernica’. This painting is an icon of the modern culture.

Two main parks nearby the center of Madrid are Retiro and the Royal Botanical Garden. Retiro is the biggest and most famous recreational place in the city centre of Madrid while the Royal Botanical Garden is recommended for all those who want to see unique species of plants and trees. Rerito lies just of the city center and is the demographically the oldest neighborhood in the city.

Main squares located in Madrid City Centre, Spain

Puerta del Sol -- one of the busiest and best known central city squares of Madrid Spain.

Plaza de Cibeles -- square with a neo-classical complex of marble sculptures with fountains at the intersection of Calle de Alcala, Paseo de Recoletos and Paseo del Prado. The square is famous for the Cibeles Palace (City Hall), and the Cibeles fountain.

Plaza Mayor -- famous city center square dominated by Casa de la Panaderia, and surrounded by tourist shops, cafes and restaurants. In the middle of Plaza Mayor stands a bronze statue of King Philip III constructed in 1616.

Plaza de España -- large central square very popular by tourists, located at the western end of the Gran Via Avenue.

Plaza de Santa Ana -- situated nearby Puerta del Sol and Calle de Huertas, in the Barrio de las Letras. The square is surrounded by numerous hotels, restaurants, cafes and tapas bars. Teatro Español, the oldest theater in Madrid city centre, is located on the plaza.

Plaza de la Villa -- small picturesque square not far from the Plaza Mayor with at its center a statue of Alvaro de Bazan. Buildings located here include the former Town Hall or Casa de la Villa, Casa de Cisneros, and Torre de los Lujanes or Lujanes Tower.

Plaza de Colón or Columbus Square -- named Plaza de Colon to honour Christopher Columbus.

Plaza de Lavapiés -- found in the central neighbourhood of Lavapiés. Its name means literally "wash feet", probably because of the Jewish origin of the place.

Plaza de la Independencia or Independence Square -- famous central Madrid square located on the Calle Alcala. One of the most remarkable symbols of Madrid, the Puerta de Alcala, or Alcala Gate can be found here.
