Florence Firenze - Piazzale Michelangelo Square - Italy :

Florence Piazzale Michelangelo -- Piazzale Michelangelo is a famous square with a magnificent panoramic view of Florence, Italy and is a popular tourist destination.

Piazza Michelangelo is on a hill on the south bank of the Arno River, just east of the center of Florence. Designed in 1869 by Poggi, it offers a great view of the city, and is a very popular tourist destination.

Piazzale Michelangelo is located on top of the hill on the opposite side of the river to the centre of Florence. From here you get magnificent views across this beautiful city. You can catch the bus here, or do what we did and walk up the steep winding road that leads you up to the top of the hill.... it is a great way to burn off some of the previous days pizza (or a good excuse for that gelato later!!). There are a couple of places to sit and have a drink or snack, and the usual tourist souvenirs.

Piazzale Michelangelo was built in 1869 to plans by Giuseppe Poggi; it offers a splendid panorama of the city. In the middle of this plaza stand bronze copies of Michelangelo’s "David" and the four statues on the tombs in the Medici Chapels.

Just above Piazzale Michelangelo is the basilica of San Miniato al Monte. Its green and white marble façade is considered one of the finest examples of the Florentine Romanesque style. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, it contains fine artworks such as the chapel of the "Crucifixion" by Michelozzo and the chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal both decorated by Luca della Robbia and the splendid frescoes by Spinello Aretino, depicting "Scenes from the Life of St. Benedict".
